Stakeholders� perception of the National Youth Service Corps programme towards a rural development targeted-restructuring in Ondo State, Nigeria

The study was carried out to assess stakeholders’ perception of the National Youth Service Corps programme towards a rural development targeted-restructuring in Ondo State, Nigeria. Two hundred and forty respondents (240) comprising of thirty (30) NYSC officials, eighty nine (89) corps members, sixty- one (61) employers and sixty (60) parents were selected using simple random sampling and snowball techniques. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count, percentage and inferential statistics including chi-square and ANOVA were used to analyse the data. Corps members’ age, sex, marital status, religion, ethnicity and educational qualification had no relationship with their disposition towards being posted to rural areas. There was also no significant relationship between corps members area of specialisation and their disposition towards serving in the rural areas (χ 2 =3.639, P=0.603). Differences occur in the perception of corps members, NYSC officials, prospective employers and parent towards restructuring NYSC for rural development targeted. (F=15.649). Perceptional statements results of respondents revealed that there were favourable responses from corps members (61.8%): NYSC officials (66.7%) and parents (81.7%) towards restructuring NYSC for rural development targeted. It was only the employers that were indifferent to the idea (49.2%). This study concluded that majority of the respondents agreed that NYSC should be used to develop the rural sector of the economy for national growth and development to occur. It was recommended that the government, NYSC officials and employers should provide adequate materials and motivation to corps members in order to stimulate them and facilitate the achievement of the NYSC set objectives.
