The aim of this study is to implement a new method of teaching painting which uses the Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE) approach for the undergraduate art students at Tehran University. In the current study, the quasi-experimental method was used to test the hypothesis three times (pre, mid and post-tests). Thirty students from two classes participated in the present study in the painting course. One way repeated measure ANOVA was applied to analyze the data. The results indicated a significant difference between the current art curriculum at Tehran University and the DBAE approach for teaching painting. In this study, the results of art production, art criticism, aesthetics and art history showed significant differences between the control group and the experimental group, in which students were trained according to a special curriculum, and also between the three tests (pre-test, mid-test, and post-test).

Key words: Art education, art production, art theories, undergraduate, Tehran University.
